Jaundice Flashcards
1
Q
When is jaundice clinically detectable?
A
Plasma bilirubin > 40
2
Q
What is prehepatic jaundice?
A
- Caused by haemolysis or congenital hyperbilirubinaemia
- Isolated raised bilirubin
3
Q
Describe a cause of congenital hyperbilirubinaemia?
A
- Gilbert’s syndrome
- Autosomal dominant or recessive
- Mild jaundice, especially when fasting
4
Q
Describe hepatocellular jaundice?
A
- Inability of the liver to convert bilirubin to bile
- Due to parenchymal disease
- Concentrations of both unconjugated and conjugated bilirubin rise
5
Q
Describe Obstructive (cholestatic) jaundice?
A
- Can be caused by:
- Failure of hepatocytes to initiate bile flow
- Obstruction of the bile ducts
- Obstruction of bile flow in the extrahepatic bile ducts
- Elevated conjugated bilirubin
6
