Passive Transport Flashcards
Diffusion
Is the movement from an area of high concentration to an area of low concentration
Does diffusion require energy?
It does not require energy (ATP)
Osmosis
Same as diffusion but with water molecules. Osmosis is the diffusion of water across a semi-permeable membrane.
Facilitated Diffusion
When particles have to cross a cell membrane through the protein gate. This doesn’t require energy.
Hypotonic
Solutions with a low level of salt( or other solute) and water will diffuse into the cell.
What would happen to the cell in a hypotonic solution?
The cell will become lysed since water is diffusing into the cell. The cell will then burst.
Hypertonic
Solutions with a high level of salt (or other solute) and water will diffuse out of the cell.
What would happen to the cell in a hypertonic solution?
The cell will shrivel up since water in diffusing out of the cell.
Isotonic
There is a balance of solute(salt) and solvent(water). The amount of water being transported into the cell is equal to the water being transported out of the cell. There is no net movement of water into or out.
