Enzymes Flashcards
Enzyme (aka organic catalysts)
Cells in your body that acts as a catalysts that make a chemical reaction.
What are enzymes made off?
Enzymes are made up of proteins
Activation Energy
Is the minimum amount of energy required to start a chemical reaction.
What does a lowered activation energy do to the enzyme?
A lowered activation energy increases the rate of reaction.
What is the purpose of an enzyme in respect to the rate?
Enzymes increase the rate of reaction(speed things up)
Substrate
The substances enzymes are bind to
Active site
Area where the substrate fits. It’s located in between the enzyme and the substrate.
Lock and Key model
For every enzyme, there is a specific substrate that binds to it. The substrate acts as the key and the active site of an enzyme acts as the lock.
Optimum (Optimal) Temperature
Optimal temperature is the temperature where enzymes work at their best
What does freezing/cooling do to the molecules?
Molecules slow down
What does heating do to the molecules?
Molecules speed up causing more clashes, resulting in more reactions
Denaturation
Is the irreversible change in the protein structure(bent out of shape) when heated above optimal temperature
Why do enzymes have a certain optimum pH level?
To maintain their functional structure
Coenzymes
Small organic molecules that assist enzymes to work
Cofactor
Inorganic compound( not made of carbon)
