Plasma Membrane Flashcards
What are the two main component of the plasma membrane?
- Proteins
- Phospholipids
What are the components of the Phospholipid?
It contains a phosphate head and 2 fatty acid tails
Is the phosphate head hydrophilic or hydrophobic?
Hydrophilic(water-loving)
Are the fatty acid tails hydrophilic or hydrophobic?
Hydrophobic(water-hating)
What are the two main types of proteins in the cell membrane?
- Integral Proteins
- Peripheral Proteins
Where are the Integral Proteins found?
They span the width of the membrane
Where are the Peripheral Proteins found?
They’re usually associated on the outside of the membrane
Function of the Plasma Membrane
It controls which substances move in and out of the cell. It ensures that the cell keeps what it needs and expels what it doesn’t. This ensures a balance of the internal cell environment.
What are Glycoproteins?
They are proteins with carbohydrates attached. It allows it to bind with other cells of the same type. (A protein molecule that has one or more carbohydrate u it’s covalently bonded to it.
What are Glycolipid?
A lipid molecule that has one or more carbohydrate unit covalently bonded to it.
Function of Channel proteins
Form a pore through the hydrophobic interior of the membrane to enable water soluble molecules to pass by facilitated diffusion
Function of the Carrier proteins
Permit the passage of specific molecules by facilitated diffusion or active transport
Function of cholesterol molecules
Regulates membrane consistency. Cholesterol helps to restrict the passage of molecules by increasing the packaging of phospholipids.
