What is a perfective aspect?
A completed action
e.g. she walked her dog
What is an imperfective aspect?
An incomplete action
e.g. she was walking her dog
What do the perfect tense and past historic have in common?
Both are used to describe an action which is completed or where the starting/finishing point are explicitly situated in time.
Perfective aspect.
When is the perfect tense used?
To explain a punctual fact.
To describe a one-off event in the past.
To describe a completed action in the past.
To describe an event/action that took place in a limited or exact period.
When is the imperfect tense used?
To describe an action in the past with no precise time, date or duration.
To describe a habit in the past.
To describe an incomplete or ongoing action in the past (what was going on the the background).
