What does ‘qui’ describe?
An antecedent (human and non-human) that is the SUBJECT of the verb that follows.
What does ‘que’ describe?
An antecedent (human and non-human) that is the OBJECT of the verb that follows.
When is ‘dont’ used?
Means ‘of/about/from which/whose’.
Replaces nouns preceded by ‘de’.
It can refer to people or things.
What is the word order in French when ‘dont’ is equivalent to ‘whose’?
Dont + subject + verb + complement/object
Whose + object + subject + verb (equivalent in English)
When is ‘qui’ used?
After prepositions (excluding ‘de’, ‘entre’ and ‘parmi’) if the antecedent is human. e.g. l’homme à qui j’ai donné un livre
Which pronouns are used if the antecedent is not human (related to ‘qui’)?
Lequel, laquelle, lesquels and lesquelles.
e.g. la decision avec laquelle ils n’étaient pas d’accord
What are ‘lequel etc.’ combined with ‘de’?
Duquel, de laquelle, desquels, desquelles.
What is ‘lequel etc.’ when combined with ‘à’?
Auquel, à laquelle, auxquels, auxquelles.
