Q

What is the main difference between the sentence structures of passe compose and present tense?

A
  • In Passé Compose, you HAVE TO HAVE either avoir or etre (for the auxillary verb) but you get RID of it in Present Tense. So if someone asked you if you ate pizza (Est-ce que tu as mangé de la pizza?) and you answered in present tense, it would be “Non, je le mange maintenant.” (No, I’m eating it now) but if you answered in past tense, it would be “Oui, j’ai mangé ça hier.”
  • In Passé Compose, you use PAST PARTICIPLES when conjugating the verb. In Present Tense, you conjugate it according to the verb endings and the personal pronoun (je - e, tu - es, il/elle/on - e…).

Q

What are two IMPORTANT things when it comes to past participles in Passé Compose?

A
  • Add an extra “e” to a past participle that ends with an “é” when it refers to a FEMALE AND is conjugated using ÊTRE.
  • Add an extra “s” to a past participle that ends with an “é” if it refers to MORE THAN ONE PERSON (PLURAL) AND is conjugated using ÊTRE.

**Note: DO NOT do either of this if the auxiliary verb is avoir rather than être.
