Parvovirus and Pox Virus Flashcards
Describe parvovirus.
linear, ssDNA, icosahedral capsid, non-enveloped, Equal number of - and + progeny
Where does parvovirus replicate?
in the nucleus
What is fifth disease?
Parvo B19 infection. Characteristic slapped cheek rash and lacy red rash on trum and limbs
In what subclass of patients can parvoB19 be serious?
Can cause transient aplastic crisis in Sickle cell patients.
Can cause severe fenal anemia in 5% of infections
Describe structure of pox virus.
Non-icosahedral, dsDNA with proteins, complex structure (brick-shaped). Has core and lateral bodies surrounded by envelope. Extracellular virus has additional envelope.
How is smallpox spread?
inhalation of virus from ruptured mouth lesions from infected individuals
Describe presentation of smallpox.
Prodrome of high fever, maliaise, body aches, viremia with small red spots in mouth and tongue.
After viremia, infected macros spread to skin and cause lesions.
How do you distinguish smallpox from chickenpox?
smallpox is febrile, chickenpox not
smallpox lesions firm and deep with BB and pit, chickenpox superficial
smallpox lesions are all at same stage, chickenpox at different stages in different areas
How is young adulthood form of molluscum contagiosum spread?
sexually transmitted
What are 4 features that allow for eradication of smallpox?
- humans are only resavoir
- no healthy carriers
- no sub-clinical infections
- effective vaccine available
How long is a smallpox patient contagious?
until last pox falls off and scabs
