How do the green party select their leaders?

A

any members of the party can stand. Members vote using AV.

How do Lib-dems select their leader?

A

candidates for leadership must be MP nominated by, 10% of lib-dem MPs, 20% local parties and 200 members. All members then vote using STV. Winning candidate must receive 50% of 1st preferences.

How do the Labour party select their leader?

A

candidate must be MP and nominated by
10% MPs, 5% constituency labour parties, 5% affiliate members ( at least 2 trade unions). Rule changes under Ed Miliband allowed any member of public who supported labour to join party as “registered supporter” for £3 and qualify to participate in election( led to election of Corbyn 2015)
candidates then voted on by OMOV using alternative vote- winning candidate must be backed by 50% preferences.

How do conservative members select their leader?

A

65 and 97 leadership election was restricted to party MPs only. A candidate must be an MP and nominated by 2 other MPs. Shortlist is produce- All conservative MPs vote in a series of ballots until the shortlist is 2 MPs. The vote that goes to all Conservative party members and the candidate who receives their most votes is elected.
