What is the dual state model?
suggests there are 2 types of state/ government when comes to pressure group activity
What are the 2 types of state/ government under the dual state model?
social/ moral issues- state has less of a vested interest and lots of evidence of pluralism- cause groups have chance of success
economic/ financial issues- state has vested interest- lots of evidence of elitism- sectional groups like the CBI have lot of influence
Why was corporatism being criticised by the 1970s?
wasn’t working- British economy one of the worst in Europe
damaged parliamentary sovereignty
gave too much influence to unelected groups
unions were weakened by the no strike pledges
What had happened since the 1980s/90s?
massive rise in the number of cause groups
perhaps because of ineffective parliamentary opposition to strong govts.- weak labour opposition to Thatcher and conservative to Blair.
Cause groups filling the vacuum.
What did Blair do to do with pressure groups?
Distanced labour from relationship with unions but under Miliband and Corbyn return of influence
coalition 2010-2015- Austerity saw waves of public sector strikes- sectional groups, unions, cause groups- peoples assembly against austerity
conservatives- frosty relationship with previous allies- e.g.- BMA
