- Parts of the Eye (Functions) Flashcards
Lens
Changes shape to focus light onto retina
Iris
Controls the amount of light entering the eye
Suspensory Ligaments
Hold lens in place
Ciliary Muscle
Changes thickness of lens when focusing
Optic Nerve
Carries nerve impulses to the brain
Sclera
Tough, white, protective layer
Choroid
Black layer containing lots of blood vessels
Retina
Inner light-sensitive layer with rod and cone cells
Aqueous Humour
Watery liquid at the front of the eye that nourishes the lens and maintains pressure
Vitreous Humour
Transparent, gelatinous mass which maintains the round shape of the eye, supports the retina and nourishes the lens
Cornea
Transparent area where light enters
Conjunctiva
Delicate, transparent layer in front of cornea
Pupil
A hole in the centre of the iris which allows light to pass through
Blind spot
Where optic nerve and blood vessels leave the eyeball
