Parts of the Eye Flashcards
sclera
It’s an opaque, protective outer structure.
It is a soft connective tissue which helps maintain the spherical shape.
Muscles
controls the movement of the eye within the eye socket
iris
it is made up of muscles and its function is to help control the amount of light entering the eye.
retina
it’s a photosensitive layer of cells at the back of the eye that pass impulses along the optic nerve
lens
transparent, flexible, curved structure. It’s function is to focus incoming light rays onto the retina
vitreous humor
it is a transparent liquid located behind the lens. Acts as a ‘suspension’ for the lens
cornea
it is the transparent, curved front of the eye which converges the light rays which enter the eye
blind spot
this is where the bundle of sensory fibres form the optic nerve; it contains no light
optic nerve
the largest sensory nerve of the eye. It carries electrical impulses from the retina to the brain
Pupil
it is a hole in the middle of the iris where light is allowed to continue its passage
