Cells definitions Flashcards
Resolution
The ability to distinguish between 2 different points.
Example sentence: The resolution of the microscope was so high that individual cells could be seen clearly.
Mitochondria
Site of respiration to release energy.
Example sentence: The mitochondria are often referred to as the powerhouse of the cell.
Cell membrane
Controls what substances can enter and leave the cell.
Example sentence: The cell membrane is selectively permeable, allowing only certain substances to pass through.
Cytoplasm
Site of chemical reactions.
Example sentence: Many metabolic reactions take place in the cytoplasm of the cell.
Ribosomes
Site of protein synthesis.
Example sentence: Ribosomes are composed of RNA and protein and are essential for building proteins in the cell.
Vacuole
Contains cell sap and keeps the cell firm and rigid.
Example sentence: The vacuole in plant cells stores water and other substances, helping to maintain turgidity.
Specialised cell
A cell that has particular sub-cellular structures.
Example sentence: Neurons are a type of specialised cell that is adapted for transmitting electrical signals.
Nucleus
Where genetic material is stored. Controls the cell.
Chloroplast
Site of photosynthesis. Contains chlorophyll to absorb sunlight.
Cell wall
Supports and shapes the cell
Slime capsule
This is for protection and isn’t found on all bacteria
Flagellum
Spins like a propeller for movement
