Parts of the Brain & Their Functions Flashcards
What is the frontal lobe responsible for?
thinking, creativity, emotions, executive plans, normal behavior in social situations, voluntary movements
Motor Cortex
Initiates voluntary movement
Parietal Lobe
Comprehends sensory input, gives you a sense of direction for the world around you, carries out the action for remembering and perceiving, analyzes objects in space.
Temporal Lobe
Hearing, speech, memory, understanding, written and verbal material, face recognition.
Insular Lobe
Emotions and behaviors related to feelings, sensory processing, decision making, motor control.
Cerebellum
Coordinates motor activity (does not generate it), short term memory, and following rules.
Occipital Lobe
Seeing and perception, receives electrical impulses from receptors in the eyes.
Thalamus
Relays motor and sensory signals to the cerebral cortex.
Hypothalamus
Maintains homeostasis.
Pituitary Gland
Regulates hormones that influence growth, blood pressure, and reproduction
Penial Gland
Receives light and dark information to secrete melatonin
Optic Tracts
Carries visual information (visual pathway)
Midbrain
Controls functions like vision, hearing, eye movement, bodily movement. Also responds to noise.
Pons
Motor control, sensory analysis, involved in movement and posture.
Medulla Oblongata
Controls breathing, heart rate, and blood pressure.
