Parts of the Brain Flashcards
Pituitary Gland
(orange teardrop) [bottom of the brain] releases important hormones
Cerebellum
(brown part) processes sensory input, coordinated movement output and balance, and enables nonverbal learning and memory
Corpus Callosum
(solid shiny orange beads) Connects the two hemispheres of the brain so that they can communicate
Limbic System (limbic system)
(purple part) deals with three key functions: emotions, memories, and arousal/stimulation
Amygdala (limbic system)
(solid shiny purple beads) primarily involved in the processing of emotions and memories associated with fear
Hippocampus (limbic system)
(see-through blue beads) helps process conscious memories of facts and events
Hypothalamus (limbic system)
(yellowish green) directs several maintenance activities (eating, sleeping, body temp)
Thalamus (brainstem)
(green bead) The brain’s sensory control center. It directs messages to the sensory receiving areas in the cortex and transmits replies to the cerebellum and medulla.
Medulla (brainstem)
(see through orange bead) controls heart beat and thinking
Pons (brainstem)
(light blue beads) handles unconscious processes and jobs, including the sleep-wake cycle and breathing
Reticular Formation (RA) (brainstem)
(red bead) Travels through the brainstem. Plays an important role in arousal.
Brainstem (brainstem)
(orange paint) responsible for automatic surival functions. the central core of the brain
Broca’s Area (language regions)
(see through green-yellow) devises a PLAN for speaking, passed along to the motor cortex
Warnicki’s Area (language regions)
(dark red round) left hemisphere near the auditory cortex. involved in the comprehension of speech
Angular Gyrus (language regions)
(red rhinestone) complex language-related functions like reading and writing.
Soma-sensory Cortex (cortexes)
(sparkly purple) near the front of the parietal lobe. receives and processes sensory info from across the body, such as touch, temp, and pain.
Prefrontal Cortex (cortexes)
(purple stripes) covers the front of the frontal lobe. cognitive control functions and dopamine.
Cerebral Cortex (cortexes)
(light green) the body’s ultimate control and information-processing center
Motor Cortex (TWO - both premotor and primary motor cortex) (cortexes)
(light red round) at the rear of the frontal lobes . controls voluntary movements by sending signals out to the body
Occupital Lobe (lobes)
(green paint) at the back of the head. Includes areas that receive info from the visual fields.
Frontal Lobe (lobes)
(red paint) involved with speaking and muscle movements and in making plans and judgments.
Temporal Lobe (lobes)
(yellow paint) Includes the auditory areas, each receiving info from the opposite ear.
Parietal Lobe (lobes)
(blue paint) receives sensory input for touch and body sensation
