What is the passive auxiliary?
The be verb is used to form passive sentences
-The region was devastated
The passive is always followed by the -ed participle
What is the Progressive auxiliary?
The be verb is used to form progressive aspect
-The baby is sleeping
The progressive is always followed by the ing-form
What is the perfect aspect?
The verb have is used to express perfect aspect
-Tom has finished his degree course
The perfect aspect is always followed by the -ed pariciple.
What is the auxiliary dummy DO?
The verb DO is introduced as the dummy operator when there is no auxiliary present.
-Amy did not enjoy the party
Do is always by the base form of the verb
What are modal auxiliaries?
The remaining auxiliiaries, words such as;
present: can, may, will, shall, must
past: could, might, would, should
What meanings does modals express?
Human control over events: “You may leave now”
Judgment whether an event was, is or will likely happen.
