how do we identify the part of the speech of a word in a particular sentence
process of elimination and use multiple cues to pick out patterns
what does AUX, PRON, PREP, D, ADJ, N stand for?
auxiliary verb, pronoun, preposition, determiner adjective and noun
What are function words?
Also known as closed word class/grammatical words because words belonging to this group have a grammatical role. e.g. determiner, pronouns, preposition, auxiliary verb and conjuctions
What are content words?
Also known as open word class/lexical words because words belonging to this group modify meaning. e.g. noun full verb, adjective and adverb
what form biased criteria is useful for identifying parts of speech?
suffixation-word endings (some are specific to nouns, verbs etc)
distribution-refers to the other words that occur in the context of the word whose part of speech we are trying to determine (pattern identification)
why are determiners helpful in identifying parts of speech?

how to identify a determiner
Try substituting with another unambiguous determiner e.g. the/their without it becoming ungrammatically incorrect
