clause structure/patterns Flashcards
Identify the clause patterns:
Intransitive Monotransitive Copula Complex transiitve Diatransitive
What is a Intransitive?
S+V
Subject is performing the action/ doing the verb, but is not acting on anything else (no object)
List 5 examples of intransitive clauses
Anything with S+V
What is a monotransitive?
S V DO
E.g. Tamara / collects / books
Subject is performing the action/ doing the verb, and acting on something/someone else (the direct object)
If a clause pattern is transitive, there will be an object present
List 5 examples of monotransitive clauses
SVDO
BECOME,TURN are examples of what pattern type?
complex
What is a copula?
S V SC
E.g. Frogs / are / amphibians/ Frogs are green
In the copula construction, the copula verb links the subject to the subject complement, with the meaning that the subject ‘is’ that thing/ that characteristic
list the copula verbs
What are: be/seem/appear/sound/become/feel
Distinguish between diatransitive and complex trans.
In a DIA pattern there is a tranfer happening DO is given to someone/thing (IO has to be a person/thing)
In a COMPLEX nothing is being given a thing/person is turning into something SVDO=IO
FORWARDED, GIVING,SENDING,TRANSFERING are all examples of what pattern type?
DIA
What phrases are usually in copula constructions?
NP(subject)+ copula verb+NP/AdjP(complement the be/copula verb)
What types of complements?
Subject complement
Obj complement
What is a subject complement?
The verb must be in copula form and the 2nd phrase refers to the entity of the subject
What is object complement?
When the word is modify/adding to the direct object
List 5 examples of copula clauses
What is a complex transitive?
S V DO OC
They / made / her / the group leader
In the complex transitive, the object is being linked with the object complement, but here the subject is causing that
The subject is acting on the object to make it that thing/characteristic; therefore, this is a type of transitive
List 5 examples of complex transitive clauses
What is diatransitive pattern
S V ID DO OR S V DO IO
there is an overall meaning of transferral or something being done for someone else
In the ditransitive, there are
2 objects (hence the prefix di- in the name ditransitive, meaning two or double)
in which clause is :the direct object the one being acted upon by the subject and the indirect object is the recipient of the direct object
Dia
which is also known as double object construction?
dia
