what are the two types of leaves?
simple- single, undivided blade
compound- 2 or more leaflets
what is the cuticle?
thin waxy covering that’s main function is to prevent water loss within the leaf
what is the epidermis?
layer of cells underneath the cuticle, that serves as the skin
what is the xylem?
transports water (upper layer)
what is the phloem?
transports sugar/food (lower layer)
what is the mesophyll?
divided into 2 layers; palisade and spongy; word means middle and leaf in greek
what are chloroplasts?
where photosynthesis occurs
what is stomata?
tiny holes that let the leaf “breathe”; allow co2 to enter and O to exit
what are guard cells?
allow the stomata to open and close
what are bundle sheath cells?
outer layer of cells of the vein surrounding the xylem and phloem
