Cells and systems vocab Flashcards
memorization of basic terms
What is a cell?
smallest unit that performs the functions of life
What is a cell membrane?
the cells’ “security guard”; allows certain substances into the cell
what is the nucleus?
the organelle that controls all of the cell’s activites
What is the cell wall?
a rigid structure that surrounds the cell
What is an organelle?
a structure inside the cell that has a specific function
What is the cytoplasm?
gel like substance that supports the cell from inside the membrane.
What is the vacuole?
a fluid-filled organelle that stores water, food, wastes, etc
What is a chloroplast?
organelle only in plants; contains chlorophyll and allows plants to make carbohydrates
What is an artery?
Blood vessel that carries oxygen-rich blood from the heart
What is a vein?
blood vessel that carries blood back to the heart
What is a semi-permeable membrane?
only allows certain materials to go through
What is villi? (s. villus)
tiny fingerlike projection on the inner lining of the small intestine
What is diffusion?
movement of particles in a liquid or gas from an area of high conc. to an area of low conc.
What is osmosis?
diffusion of a SOLVENT (usually water) through a selectively-permeable-membrane
What is a tissue?
group of cells that have the same function/structure
