Definitions; Mix and flow of matter Flashcards
Basic Unit vocab memorization
What is a fluid?
Matter that has no definite shape, can flow and takes the shape of its container: substance in gas or liquid state
What is a Pure substance?
Substance that is made up of only one type of particle throughout
what is a mixture?
Made up of two or more pure substances
Whats a heterogenous mixture? (HE)
A mixture where you can see the different substances due to the particles staying together but not intermingled.
What is a homogenous mixture?
A mixture that is made up of different substances, and they can’t be seen because the particles are intermingled.
what is a solution?
AKA homogenous mixture; different substances can’t be seen because the particles are mixed.
What is a mechanical Mixture?
AKA heterogenous mixture; the different substances can be seen because the particles stay together but aren’t mixed.
what is a solute?
substance that gets dissolved in a solvent to form a solution
What is a solvent?
Substance that dissolves a solute
What is concentration?
amount of solute (g/kg) that gets dissolved in a specific amount of solvent (mL/L) in a solution (g/mL)(kg/L)
What is a saturated solution?
A solution where no more solute can be added/dissolved at a given temp
What is an unsaturated solution?
Solution where more solute can be dissolved at a given temp
What is solubility?
ability to dissolve; mass of solute that can dissolve to form a saturated solution
What is a saturation point?
The point where no more solute can be added in a given volume of solvent at a given temp
What is an aqueous solution?
water is the main solvent
what is viscosity?
the internal resistance/friction that keeps a fluid from flowing
what is density?
mass per unit volume; it can be found by dividing mass by volume
what is the buoyant force?
the upwards force that a fluid exerts onto an object; opposite of what gravity in a fluid does in an object
what is buoyancy?
the tendancy of an object to float when placed in a fluid
what are elements
can’t be broken down
what are compounds?
two or more elements
IMPORTANT: what is colloid?
an HE mixture in which the particles don’t settle, and stay mixed together
IMPORTANT: what is emulsion?
when droplets of fat are prevented from joining by an emulsifying agent
IMPORTANT: what is suspension?
an HE mixture in which the particles don’t settle, but eventually seperate from one another
What is mass?
amount of matter in an object
what is volume?
amount of space occupied by a 3D object
