- Difficult to berth in a marina, when there’s wind.
- Will get blown off line easily.
- May be unstable

- Stable

- Cannot go astern easily, so it’s reccomended you do not berth stern-first.
- Tend to be associated with small-beamed boats, so there is a smaller cabin.

- Slow turning into the wind.
- Poor upwind performance
- Visitor berths often not big enough for the two hulls
- Marinas often charge double to berth.
Types of Rig:
What is a “Fractional Rig Sloop”?
Taller mast than a “Masthead Sloop”, but the forestay is attached at a lower point and not at the top like it is in a “Masthead Sloop”.

Shorter mast than a “Fractional Rig Sloop”, but the forestay (and foresail) goes right to the top of the mast.

What is a “Ketch Rig”?
- Two masts.
- Main mast and an aft “mizzen” mast
- Foresail and mizzen can be used without mainsail in strong winds.

What is a “Yawl Rig”?
- Two masts.
- Main mast and an aft “mizzen” mast.
- The mizzen is much smaller than the main.
- Rudder post in front of the mizzen.

- Two masts.
- The after mast is taller.
- Aftermost sail used with another foresail in strongr winds.
What is a “burgee”?
A small triangular flag which shows the membership of a yacht club- Flown from the starboard spreaders.
What is an “Ensign”?
The national flag of a country- Usually flown near the mast or on the stern.
What is a “Courtesy Ensign”?
The national flag of the territorial water you’re currently in- Courteous to fly it on a starboard spreader (and discourteous on the port spreader).
What is the front part of the sail called?
The luff
What is the base of the sail called?
The foot of the sail.
What is the top of the sail called?
The head of the sail.
What is the aftward part of the sail called?
The leech.
What is the mast-side corner of the sail called?
The tack
What is the “camber line”?
The part of the sail which bends the most when the wind fills the sail up.
What are port and starboard “trim-tabs”?
Tabs on the stern that alter the orientation of the boat.
- Both tabs up: bow up
- Both tabs down: bow down
- Port tab down: port up
- Starboard tab down: starboard up
What sits with the life ring and where are these all on the boat?
A light and drogue, attached to the danbuoy, in a wire frame on the stern.
What is the “O Flag” and what is it attached to?
The international “Man Overboard” flag, attached to the danbuoy (which is associated with the life ring).

The clew
What are the three corners of the sail called?
- THC
