Q

what are the five particle theory points

A
  1. All matter is made up of tiny particles too small to see
  2. There are spaces between the particles
  3. There are attractive forces between the particles and the weaker they are the further apart the particles travel.
  4. The particles are always moving
  5. Particles move faster at higher temp than at lower temp

Q

what happens during the melting of a solid

A

When a solid is heated the particles get more energy and vibrate more, which makes the solid expand and at the melting point the particles vibrate so much that they break away from their positions, when this happens the solid becomes a liquid.

Q

what happens when something boils

A

The particles move faster and bump into each other which makes the liquid expand and at the boiling point the particles break bonds that hold them together and break away from the liquid to form a gas.

Q

what is diffusion

A

Once the perfume or cologne is sprayed into the air, it converts into a gas and its particles are mixed with other air particles.

Q

what is expansion and contraction and how does it work

A

When things expand it requires more space and when they contract they need less space. When the solid is heated the particles absorb energy and vibrate more and bump into each other. Which causes them to move further apart so then they have room for more violent vibrations. As a result, the solid itself expands. When the solid is cooled the energy is lost so the particles slow down and require less space.

Q

what happens to the particles in a flat tire

A

When there a flat tire the particles that are lift start to bounce of the walls causing air pressure. Some of the air has escaped which is why there isn’t enough particles to keep it inflated.
