What is a hazard
A source of potential harm or situation with the potential to cause harm, injury, death, disease, financial loss or equipment loss
What is a risk
The chance of something happening (that will have a negative effect)
Risk factors
Something that increases the chance of the unwanted event occurring
Risk control
Measures put in place to decrease the likelihood or consequence of an unwanted event.
Risk register
A risk register, or risk log is a document used as a risk management tool to fulfill regulatory compliance
Risk management
A proactive process that should be planned and cover all reasonably foreseeable hazards and associated risks.
Act
The key principles, duties and rights that relate to occupational health and safety
Regulation
Specific ways that employers must adhere to the OHS act, such as reporting and recording incidents and required licences.
Codes of practice
Practical advice and guidelines for specific elements of OHS in the workplace, such as first aid and working in confined spaces.
Legislation
The requirements and responsibilities enforced by law in Australia
Incident causation
The primary reasons or factors why an injury occurred ( eg, exposure to a hazard, weather, environment or human error)
Consultation
The process of formally discussing something to seek advice and make decisions
Reasonably practicable
What is possible in the circumstances, depending on size of the business, nature of the organisation, literacy abilities of staff and work arrangements.
Impeding factors
To delay or prevent something
Residual risk
The risk that remain once the risk control option has been implemented.
