part 7 Flashcards
problems of hemostasis
thrombocytopenia: immune Thrombocytopenia purpura (ITP), heparin-induced thrombocytopenia (HIT), heparin induced thrombocytopenia and thrombosis syndrome (HITTS)
What are the S/S of thrombocytopenia?
- platelets <150,000
- bleeding
- weak, dizzy, abd pain, hypotension
- subtle confusion, HA = cerebral hemorrhage
What are the S/S of thrombocytopenia associated with cerebral hemorrhage?
subtle confusion
HA
-bleeding: petechiae, purpura, eccymosis
HIT
What is a common cause of neutropenia? What s/s of infection should we watch for with this pt?
- chemo and immunosuppressive therapy
- watch for fever greater than 100.4
Group of related disorders resulting from ineffective blood cell production
myelodysplastic syndrome
-possible causes are chemo, radiation, and industrial solvents
Blood Products:
- how much is one unit?
- how long can you store?
- what are the indications?
- 250-350 mL
- stored up to 35 days
- indications = symptomatic anemia and acute blood loss
platelets indications for use?
bleeding from thrombocytopenia
liquid portion of whole blood
-separated from cells and frozen
FFP
What are the indications for use of FFP?
bleeding caused by deficiency in clotting factors
-DIC, hemorrhage, massive transfusion, liver disease, vit K deficiency, excessive warfarin
-prepared from plasma
albumin
What are the indications for use of albumin?
hypovolemic shock
hypoalbuminemia
What are cryoprecipitate and commercial products and indications?
- prepared from fresh frozen plasma
- replacement of clotting factors: factor VIII, von Willebrand, and fibrinogen
