Safety critical communication, what you need to say?
-State who you are (name, role, TOC)(Train operating company I.e Northern)
-check who you are speaking to
-give your location & reason for calling
-clarify what, if any assistance is required
-ensure the message is repeated back to check for understanding
Phrases to avoid when using Safety critical communication?
-line not clear
-over and out
-roger
-umms and errs
-slang terms
-vague language
-jargon
-regional expressions
Lead responsibility?
-one person involved in the conversation has lead responsibility
-they help the other person pass on information clearly & to understand what is required
-lead responsibility is about communication
-electrical control operator (ECO) leads everyone
-signaller leads everyone (except the ECO)
-but be prepared to challenge poor communication practice
What is the GSM-R?
Global system for mobile communication-railway
-one set in each cab
-used by drivers and conductors to contact signallers, ECO, control and other organisations
-red button to make emergency calls
-sends a written message and audible warning to all trains to stop
