Part 2 - Railway Environment Flashcards
General Hazards on the railway?? (7)
-Trains

What is on or near the line mean?
When you are:
-on the line itself
-within 3m of the nearest running rail and there is no permanent fence or structure
-within 1.25m of a platform edge and you are carrying out engineering or technical work
What is lineside?
Lineside
- You are between the railway boundary and the area called on or near the line.
- Not on a station platform
How far from the running rail is a Position of safety when a train is passing?
A safe place to stand when a train is passing
- 0-100mph minimum of 1.25m away
- 101-125mph minimum of 2m away
How long does it take a train to travel 1/4 mile?
- 75mph- 12 seconds
- 100mph - 9 seconds
- 125mph - 7 seconds
We have to consider this when walking and crossing the line.
Can signals be passed at danger?
- Never assume trains have beens stopped because signals are at danger.
- Trains can pass signals at danger at speeds of up to 50mph.
What does TCOC stand for?
Track circuit operating clips
What are axle counters?
- The number of wheels on a train are counted and stored by axle counters when the train enters a section.
- As the train passes the axle counters the signal reverts to danger as the line is occupied.
- At the end of the section another axle counter counts the wheels leaving the section.
- Providing the numbers entering & exiting the section are the same the signal will revert to a proceed aspect.
How far away should equipment be away from the track & why?
- Tools/equipment must be at least 2 metres away from any running line.
This prevents
- It being blown onto the track by a passing trains.
- Interfering with the track circuit and axle counters.
