Part 4 of Chapter 6: Blood pressure🫀 Flashcards
1
Q
What is blood presusre?
A
- Blood pressure refers to the pressure that blood exerts on the walls of the blood vessels.
- E.g. Veins, arteries and capillaries.
2
Q
Where is blood taken from a person to measure their blood pressure?
A
- The blood pressure of a person is usually measured from the arteries of the upper arm and using the unit, millimetres of mercury (mmHg).
3
Q
What is the difference between the blood pressures in ventricular systole and ventricular diastole?
A
The graph is in the revision guide and notebook.
4
Q
What is a graph that shows the pressure changes that take place in the left side of the heart during the cardiac cycle?
A
The graph is in the revision guide and notebook.
5
Q
How is a blood pressure reading expressed in a ratio?
A
- Blood pressure readings are expressed as a ratio of the systolic pressure over the diastolic pressure.
- Blood pressure readings vary from person to person. (Some of the factors: Emotions, age, stress, illness, and incidents (trauma).)
- The systolic pressure of an adult ranges from 120-140 mmHg and the diastolic pressure ranges from 75-90 mmHg.
- A healthy blood pressure reading should he lower than 120/80 mmHg, while a blood pressure reading of 140/980 mmHg or higher indicates high blood pressure or hypertension.
6
Q
What are the causes of high blood pressure?
A
- High blood pressure may occur temporarily after a vigorous exercise or when a person is angry, but persistent high blood pressure is a dangerous medical condition that requires medical attention.
