Inflammation of the middle ear?
otitis media (OM) -can be viral or bacterial
How can you prevent OM?
stay up to date with immunizations
What are some causes of acute or chronic OM?
bottle propping
day care
cleft palate
cigarette smoke
- fluid in middle ear without inflammation or infection
- peak age is 6 months to 2 years
OME - otitis media with effusion
-eustachian tube malfunction or obstruction
What are some predisposing factors to OM?
- differences in eustachian tubes (shorter, wider, straighter)
- URI, allergic rhinitis
- down syndrome, cleft palate
- passive smoking
- bottle feeding in supine position
- pacifier use several hours a day
- attend child care centers
What are some clinical manifestations of acute otitis media?
- otalgia (pain in ear)
- fever
- irritability
- nasal congestion
- severe pain
- otoscopic findings (red bulging TM)
What are the clinical manifestations of OM with effusion?
- visible fluid behind eardrum
- tinnitus
- fullness in ear
- popping sounds
- hearing loss
- mild balance disturbance
- retracted TM
What is the therapeutic management of OM?
- antibiotics
- myringotomy: surgical incision of TM
- tympanostomy: surgical pressure equalizer tubes
General term applied to a broad classification of upper airway illnesses that result from swelling of the epiglottis and larynx. Mostly caused by parainfluenza virus
croup
Characterized by:
hoarseness
barking cough
inspiratory stridor
respiratory distress
-affects the larynx, trachea, and bronchi
-epiglottitis, laryngitis, laryngotracheobronchitis (LTB), tracheitis
croup
