What is a URI and what causes it?
- nasopharyngitis (common cold)
- caused by numerous viruses: RSV, rhinovirus, adenovirus, influenza, parainfluenza
What are the differences between the signs and symptoms of nasopharyngitis (URI or common cold) between younger and older children?
younger: fever, irritable/restless, poor feeding, sneezing, vomit or diarrhea
older: muscle aches, possible cough, dry nose and throat, cough and chills
When a child has a URI (nasopharyngitis or common cold) why should we be aware of an earache?
it can be a secondary bacterial infection
-ear infection
Infections of the lower airway includes what structures?
bronchi and bronchioles
What is the treatment for viral pharyngitis/common cold?
antipyretics fluids rest increase HOB suction vaporize saline nose drops
Why should you not use decongestant nose drops for more than 3 days?
rebound congestion
