Breathing remains primarily nasal until what age?

An infants airway is approx. the width of a straw. When does it begin to increase in diameter?
5 years
-small diameter = subject to narrowing from edema and secretions
Why are infants more susceptible to lung infections?
close proximity of trachea to bronchi
What increases the risk of bacteria entering the middle ear for infants?
horizontal eustachian tube
What are some things that increase a childs risk of respiratory infection?
- immune system deficiencies
- allergies, asthma
- cardiac anomalies
- cystic fibrosis
- exposure to infections in daycare
- exposure to second hand smoke
What are the clinical manifestations of a child with a respiratory infection?
- fever
- anorexia, vomiting, diarrhea, abd pain
- cough, sore throat, nasal blockage, discharge
- resp sounds
What are the signs of impending respiratory failure?
- frequent ineffective cough
- shallow, irregular respirations
- sudden increase then decrease in respiratory rate
- drowsiness
- lack of air movement on auscultation
What are some S&S of respiratory distress?
- Nasal flaring
- wheezing
- rhonchi
- crackles
- increased WOB
Explain chest physical therapy?
- postural drainage + chest percussion + vibration + cough and deep breathing
- requires an order
- 3 to 4 times a day
