. Pare was a French army surgeon
. By experimenting on soldiers, he developed ligatures
. He discovered that an old Roman technique would work on soldiers
. He made a book about his findings
. He was sympathetic for soldiers and used other ways instead of cauterization to treat them in a less painful way
What was the significance of William Harvey
. William Harvey was a doctor in England
. Harvey discovered that blood circulates around the body and proved Galen wrong
. Many people hated him after he published his work
. Many people rejected his work because he didn’t know capillaries existed at that time
What was the great plague
. During the renaissance period, there was another bubonic plague that wreaked havoc in 1665
What was the similarities between the great plague and the black death?
. The Government didn’t do much to prevent it
. They still believed god caused it
. Lots of people died
. They both had superstitious beliefs (whipping themselves and using sweet smells to ward off illness)
. They did not have a cure

. Some treated patients and cared for them
. Funded by rich people
. The government ran the hospitals instead of the church

. John hunter was an army surgeon in 1760 for 3 years
. He developed treatments for gunshot wounds
. He encouraged dissections
. He set up a teaching museum
. He taught the importance of observations
What was the significance of Edward Jenner
. Edward Jenner was inoculated as a child
. He got terribly sick
. One of the people he was inoculated with died
. He figured out that if you get cowpox then you are immune from smallpox
. Not many people liked him at first because they made a lot of money from inoculation
How did chance improve health in the renaissance period
. It was chance that Paré ran out of burning oil and discovered a less painful ointment he could apply to gunshot wounds
. When Pare was an army doctor, He tried a mixture of eggs and other substances as the hot oil had run out,
which he used to treat the wounds before, and applied it to the wounds
. He thought the soldiers would all be dead but, they survived
Chance also helped with the great plague because
. The great fire of London and the cold weather ended the great plague
Edward Jenner
. By chance he found out that a milkmaid was happy she got cowpox. This is because she said when you have cowpox you don’t get smallpox. Edward then discovered more and made a vaccination against smallpox
How did communication improve health in the renaissance period
. doctors such as William Harvey could make books about their work, educate other people and prove some people wrong
How did science and technology improve health in the renaissance period
. The invention of the printing press, allowed new work by the doctors to be shared quickly and train other doctors
How did war improve health in the renaissance period
. Doctors like Paré who was an army surgeon could test on willing patients and discovered an ointment and ligatures
. It allowed Paré to discover a new herbal ointment instead of burning oil to use on gunshot wounds which lowered the death rates
