Part 2 Nervous System - Structure of a neuron Flashcards
What are neurons?
Neurons are specialized cells and nerve cells for communication
How do neurons connect with each other?
Through neural networks
What are the 6 structures that form a neuron?
- nucleus (contains genetic info)
- soma
- dendrites
- myelin
- axon
- axon terminals
What is the function of the dendrites?
The dendrites receive information from other neurons which they carry from the synapse to the soma
What is the function of the soma?
The soma controls the metabolism and maintenance of the neuron
What is the function of the myelin?
The myelin is a white coating of fatty insulation covering the axon, it facilitates the transmissions passing through the axon
What is the purpose of the axon?
It is the long fiber that carries information away from the cell
What is the purpose of the Axon terminal?
The axon terminal discharges neurotransmitters that will travel through the synapse and connect with the dendrites of the post -synaptic neuron
How is information transmitted between neurons?
Info is transmitted electrically within a neuron, and chemically through the synapses between neurons
In what direction do the electrical impulses travel through the neuron?
From left to right
From the dendrites to axon-terminals
