Part 1- Nervous System Flashcards
What are the 2 main parts of the nervous system?
- Central Nervous System (CNS) = located within the brain and skull
- Peripheral Nervous System (PNS) = everything outside the brain and skull
* peripheral = perimeter*
What are the 2 main parts of the Peripheral Nervous System? Describe the first system.
1) The Somatic Nervous System
- controls voluntary movements & interacts with the external environment
- Sensory (afferent) nerves carry the sensory signals from the sensory receptors (skin, eye, ear) to the CNS
- Motor (efferent) nerves carry motor signals from the central nervous system to skeletal muscles
What is the other section of the peripheral nervous system?
The Autonomic Nervous System.
- controls involuntary movement & regulates the body’s internal environment
- sensory (afferent) nerves carry sensory signals from internal organs to the central nervous system
- motor (efferent) nerves carry motor signals from central nervous system to internal organs
What are the 2 types of nerves in the Autonomic Nervous System?
- Sympathetic nerves - located in spinal nerves
- Parasympathetic nerves
Both act on the same organ but have opposite actions
What are sympathetic nerves?
Sympathetic nerves are in charge of arousal and feeling
They are responsible for FIGHT - OR - FLIGHT - OR - FREEZE
= the way u act in specific situations when put on the spot (if I see a spider)
- increase heartbeat
- relax airways
- dilate pupils
What are parasympathetic nerves?
Parasympathetic = peace
- responsible for maintaining bodily functions while the body is in a state of balance (homeostasis)
- located in 4 cranial nerves
- Activated by Acetylcholine
- Slow heartbeat, constrict airways, constrict pupils
