Part 2 Flashcards
Ilium
Large, winglike bone that supports the abdominal muscles- prominent hip bone. Articulates with the sacrum at the sacroiliac joint.
Ischium
Makes up lower and back portion of the hip- fuses with ilium and pubis.
Pubic bone
Pubis symphosis: Cartilaginous portion where the left and right pubic bone join.
Pectoral girdle
Also known as the shoulder girdle- supports upper extremities. Includes the scapula and clavicle, also sternum.
Scapula
Attachment point for several muscles. Attaches to the clavicle and allows for flexibility and movement.
Clavicle
Collarbone. Provides anterior support for shoulder. Attaches to sternum and anterior portion of scapula.
Ribs (4 components)
12 pairs of ribs that attach to sternum by means of costal cartilage except for the lowest 2. 4 components are head, neck, shaft, and angle.
Head
Provides articulating surface with the spinal column
Neck
Portion right below the head of the rib
Shaft
Body of rib
Angle
Point at which the rib begins to curve forward
True ribs
Upper ribs 1-7 directly attach to sternum via a cartilaginous attachment
False ribs
Ribs 8-10 attach to sternum via cartilage which runs superiorly
Floating ribs
Ribs 11 and 12 articulate only with the vertebral column
Do all ribs attach to the vertebral column?
Yes.
