part 1 Flashcards
CAD may evolve to more serious conditions like….
UA: unstable angina
MI: myocardial infarction
-these are referred to as acute coronary syndrome (ACS)
What makes up ACS?
UA and MI
What is the major cause of CAD?
atherosclerosis
CAD is typically _________ until disease process is well advanced.
asymptomatic
What can cause atherosclerosis in the artery?
damage from: tobacco, hyperlipidemia, HTN, toxins, DM, homocysteine levels, and infx causing local inflammation
Lipids accumulate and migrate into smooth muscle cells. This stage may be reversible.
fatty streak
Cholesterol is brought in. Collagen covers the fatty streak. Blood flow is reducedand fissures can develop. Not reversible
fibrous plaque
The plaque ruptures and a thrombus forms causing further narrowing or total occlusion of the vessel.
complicated lesion
What is the difference between the chronic vs sudden onset of CAD in regards to angiogenesis?
- slow development allows for small arteries to grow (angiogenesis)
- sudden does not
What are the stages of CAD?
- chronic endothelial injury
- fatty streak
- fibrous plaque
- complicated lesion
