What is the delegate model?

A

An individual selected on behalf pf others on the basis of clear instruction
MP forgets about their own personal view and sacrifices it for what their constituents want

A

Stephen Loyd a lib dem MP (remainer) voted to honour the brexit referendum due to what his constituents want breaking the lib dem whip

What’s the trustee/Burkean model?

A

Made by Edmund Burke 1729/97
Believed that once their elected in their constituency they have the power to decide what they want.
Based on their own individual judgement.

A

Nick Bowles Tory MP a remainer in a leave constituency. On his own initiative he left voted against the tories bill

Rules for being a delegate?

A
  • Clear instructions on how their supposed to act on behalf of people
    -Must follow instructions and must not adapt them to fit own consciousness
  • Must not vote on personal issue

A

-Should take account of interest and values of groups
-Free to express own values
-May vote accordingly to their own consciousness

What is the mandate model?

A

MPs represent and carry out political partys and their manifesto
The party gets them elected therefor they should put their and consitituencys view aside

200 Douglas Carswell conservative MP who quit and rsan for ukip and won

Criticisms of the mandate model?

A

-Issues arise when no manifestos given, Labour MPs and Iraq war 139 rebellions
-Coalition government, unsure which manifesto people are pushing for
