Eurozone
The group of EU countries that persue a coordianted economic, financial and monetary policy. Members are the members of the Economic and Monetary Union.
Treaty of Lisbom
European Constitution. IT regulates the administration and political decision-making of the EU
Supranational organization
The EU is a supranational organization as the member countries have largely transferred their powers to the EU
Intergovernmental level
EU decisions can only be taken with the permission of the individual countries
Veto right
The power or right to cancel or postpone the decision of another branch.
Euroscepticism
The fact that not only citizens, but also governments of member states have begun to doubt or protest against the many supranational regulations.
European Commission
The executive power of the EU. Members include one commissioner of each member state.
The Council of the EU
The legislate power of the EU, also called the Council of Ministers. The governments of all member states are represented. All the national ministers in the end decide on bills.
European Council
Body that has no legislative task within the EU, but lays down the main outline of political policy.
European Parliament
Elected members that can put issues on the agenda and contribute to the thinking process, but can neither propose a bill not dismiss commissioners.
Court of justice of the EU
The judicial power of the EU. The court has one judge for each EU member. Rulings take precedence over rulings by national courts.
