Parkinsons Disease Flashcards
Sns and Symptoms of PD?
Resting Tremor Brady/akinesia Rigidity Festinating gait/ writing/ speech. Small writing/ Tented hands
Caused by degeneration of substantia nigra
Characteristics of Multisystems atrophy
Hypotension
Tachycardia
Movement disorder.
Accumulation of protein in glial cells
Characteristics of Progressive Supranuclear Palsy?
Rigidity
Bradykinesia
Oculomotor impairments* cant look up/down
Depression
Tau protein in Brain stem
Movement disorders of Parkisons?
Resting Tremor/Pill roll
Bradykinesia (slow mvmt)
Rigidity (increase tone resist pas. Mvmt)
Postural Instability (stooped forward posture and dec control)
Hypokinesia
Continuous Gait Disorder of PD?
Dec Speed/stride length Inc cadence Shuffling More double support Less arm swing
Episodic Gait Disorder in PD?
Freezing: gait halts/ complains ur glued to ground. (In more advanced disease)
Festinating: Short/JErky steps/ COM in front
Neuropsychiatric disorders of PD?
Cog decline Dementia Sleepy during day Depressed Hallucinate (rare)
Medical Management of PD
Dopaminergic agents: get tolerated to it tho
Later on in life on and off cycles
Deep Brain Stimulation
Destructive Surgery
Exam of PD?
Hoehn and Yahr scale (for motor) lower= less severe. (1-2 is pretty independent/ no falls)
PT Management of PD?
AROM/PROM Posture Strength Large scale movement (use broad movement) Relaxation (for fatigue and stress) Breathing/Airway Clearance.
PT management for falls?
Balance Reaction Increase their limit of Stability Activate Vestibular response Dual task (walk and talk) for PD walking will suffer more with cog task Strength training.
Sensory and External cues for PD?
Auditory: Metronome caused less freezing if used regularly
Visual: Laser Stripe
Vibratory cue at certain rhythm
What is something to note about group vs individual PT?
Patients with Group PT improved function more and giving HEP in a group community better than individual
One of the best preventative activities for PD?
Aerobic exercise.
Also emphasize walking FASTTT to slow/reverse progression
What is correlated with disease severity as measured by the UPDRS motor score?
Turning velocity was most difference. So cant pick up PD from walking Straight.
