Parkinsons Flashcards
Gold Standard Treatment of Parkinsons Disease
Levodopa, usually coupled with carbidopa, a peripheral decarboxylase inhibitor (PDI).
How does Levodopa work?
Crosses the blood-brain-barrier and after entering the central nervous system, it is converted into dopamine by the enzyme aromatic L-amino acid decarboxylase, also known as DOPA decarboxylase.
How does Carbidopa work?
Inhibits the decarboxylation of levodopa to dopamine in the systemic circulation, allowing for greater levodopa distribution into the central nervous system.
Abnormal movement that is most closely associated with PD?
Resting Tremor
PD gait type?
Festinating and shuffling gait
TRAP in PD
Tremors, Rigidity, Akinesia(Brady) and Postural Instability (Shuffling gait with a stooped posture often with festination).
PD, degeneration in which area of the brain?
Substantia nigra
