Brain Anatomy & Hydrocephalus Flashcards
What is in the Diecenphalon?
Thalamus
Hypothalamus
Epithalamus
What is in the Brain Stem?
Midbrain
Pons
Medulla Oblongata
Purpose of Cerebellum?
Receives and compares sensory input from proprioceptors, vestibular systems and eyes and sends signals to motor areas to either stimulate or inhibit the activity of skeletal muscles. (CO-ORDINATION)
What is composed in the Cerebrum?
White and Grey Matter
What connects the two halves of Cerebrum?
Corpus Callosum
What are the 4 lobes of the cerebrum?
Frontal, Parietal, Occipi
tal and Temporal
Where does the CSF flow?
Between the arachnoid and the Pia, in the subarachnoid space and the four ventricles of the brain and around the spinal cord.
What is Hydrocephalus?
It is when the circulation of CSF is blocked, particularly in the ventricles. So therefore it can not be reabsorbed by the arachnoid villi.
Causes of Hydrocephalus
Tumour blocking the ventricles
Stroke causing brain oedema
Overproduction of CSF
Symptoms of Hydrocephalus
-Infant
Enlarged head circumference
Bulging Fontanelle
Projectile Vomitting
Irritability
-Adult
Palpilledema
Headache
Cranial Nerve
Projectile Vomitting
Treatment of Hydrocephalus?
Placing Shunt
Medication to decrease CSF production
