Parkinson's Disease Flashcards
1
Q
Cause of PD:
A
- not well understood
- thought to be a combo of genetic susceptibility or predisposition, PLUS some as yet unidentified toxic environmental triggers

3

7
Q
Very individual condition because..(4)
A
- slow to develop
- symptoms vary
- rate of development varies
- response to meds varies too
8
Q
Primary motor symptoms:
A
- tremors at rest( usually one side of the body first) they tend to disapear with physical activitiea
- rigidity of the muscle
- unstable posture/co-ordination/balance
- slow movements
9
Q
Tremors:
A
- rhythmic, involuntary movement
- can affect head, hands and limbs
- can decrease with intentional movements
- affects about 75% of people with PD
10
Q
Rigidity:
A
- an increase in muscle tone (stiffness) causing resistance to movement
- decrease during movement
- can be painful, especially in arms and shoulders
- sometimes people with symptoms are not aware
11
Q
Slowness of voluntary movements:
A
- also called BRADYKINESIA
- sometimes can be seen as an inability to begin a specific movement
- becomes more pronounced with the progression of the disease
12
Q
Balance Co-ordination-posture:
A
- impaired ability to maintain a steady, upright posture
- diminished ability to take corrective action to prevent falls
- abrupt movement can cause falls
- a very disabling symptoms
13
Q
What is PD?
A
- a slow progressive degenerative disorder of the brain due to the loss of certain neurons which produce dopamine
- dopamine is a neurotransmitter allowing cells to send messages fo other cells
- these messages involve info enabling muscles to work normally
- impaired muscle tone and synergy results
