Dementia is a loss of mental abilty severe enough to:
- interfere with ADL
- last more than 6 months
- not present since birth
- not associated with a loss of consciousness
- not caused by injuries
Symptoms:
Affects the brain:
- memory
- language (expressive and receptive)
- reading
- writing (spelling)
- recognition
- insight; awareness of illness
- motor response
- perceptual, visual and spatial abilities
- executive functionning generally (planning)
Disorders associated with Irreversible Dementia:
DEGENERATIVE DISORDERS:
- Alzheimer’s Disease
- Parkinson’s and Lewy Body disease
- pick’s (frontal temporal) no filters.
- Huntignton’s disease(woman are carriers and men are affected)(spasms)
Disorders Associated with Irreversible Dimentia VASCULAR DEMENTIA (after stroke):
- boxer’s dementia
- head injuries (concussion, football, hockey..)
3 infectious Diseases:
- AIDS Dementia
- Creutzfdt-Jakob (mad cow disease)
- Brain abscess
Other conditions:
- brain tumors
- alcohol dementia
- heavy metal poisoning
1 Primary Dementing Diseases:
- Alzheimer’s
- Lewy Body
- Pick’s Disease (FTD)
- Mixed Dimentia
Alzheimer’s Disease:
Majority cases of dementia
Lewy Body:
Abnormal structures in neurons, stiffness, hallucinations, no sleep, sometimes neurons work and sometimes don’t..you forget but sometimes you don’t
Pick’s disease(FTD):
Shrinking neurons, dis-inhibitation, compulsion, echoing, emotional losses, stuttering ( no filters, just blurts out anyone that comes to mind)
Mixed dementia:
- AD&LB
- AD&VaD
- AD&FTD
2 Secondary Dementing Diseases: (dementia seen a second part of a disease)
- vascular dementia
- brain tumors
- brain trauma
- parkinson’s disease
- huntington’s disease
- aids
- depression
Diagnosis: (delirium, depression and dementia)
- physical exam
- lab tests
- neurologial exams
- paychiatric eval
- psychological test
- medical elimination of all other possible causes
How long does it take before having delerium, dementia and depression?
- Delirium: overnight, sudden, hours to days
- Dementia: months to years, slowly, progressive over years)
- Depression: usually months to years
