Parkinson’s disease
this is a neurological disorder, where nerve cells in the basal ganglia begin to die
degeneration of midbrain’s substantia nigra and loss of dopamine
PD etiology
Genetics, exposure to pesticides, diet, head injury
Characteristics of PD
tremors, muscle, stiffness, slow movement, balance issues
depression, dysphagia, urinary problems, cognition
Diagnosing PD
no specific test
MRI, scans, dopamine, transporter scans, blood work, medical history, and physical exam
Anatomy of PD
Degeneration of the brain, decrease in dopamine
Speech and communication of PD
dysarthria, slurring, mumbling, altered rate, voice quality
swallowing of PD
dysphagia, weight, loss, coughing, Globus sensation
Treatment of PD
exercise, medication, surgery, PT, OT, speech therapy, vitamins, medical marijuana, clinical trials
deep brain stimulation; pallidotomy
