Cranial Nerves Flashcards
brainstem parts
medulla, pons, midbrain, cranial nerves, basic bodily functions of life are maintained here
midbrain
most superior portion
pons
middle portion
medulla
lowest portion
brainstem functions
regulating major life functions, mediating head and neck reflexes via cranial nerves, regulating alertness and wakefulness
medulla oblongata
autonomic functions; motor and sensory neurons; relay of nerve signals; coordinating body movements
pons
connects cerebral cortex with medulla; communication and coordination center between two hemispheres; helps transfer messages between brain and spinal cord
midbrain
connects hindbrain to forebrain; auditory and visual responses; motor function
cranial nerve placements
1-4 from mibrain
5-8 from pons
9-12 from medulla
CN I
olfactory - smell
origin: olfactory bulb
problems: anosmia
CN II
optic - vision
origin: thalamus
problems: visual disturbances and loss of vision
CN III
oculomotor - lateral eye movements; pupil constrictor
origin: midbrain
problems: loss of pupillary light reflex
CN IV
trochlear - moves eyes up and down
origin: midbrain
problems: diplopia, nystagmus and difficulty with eye movements
CN V
trigeminal - sensation for face, mouth and anterior 2/3 of tongue; mastication muscles
origin: pons
problems: loss of sensation, difficulty chewing or abnormal jaw-jerk reflex
CN VI
abducens - rotates eyes out
origin: pons
problems: eye rotates in or nystagmus
