Parietal Lobes Flashcards
dysgraphia (n.)
problems with writing, especially cursive; problems with spelling
dyscalculia (n.)
loss of basic concepts of numbers, and decimal place in extreme cases; difficulty with math operations
What area in the brain would lesions cause dyscalculia?
Parietal lesions, especially angular gyrus
What are the symptoms of Gerstmann syndrome?
Dyscalculia, dysgraphia, finger agnosia, right-left confusion, and constructional dyspraxia
What are the basic somesthetic senses?
Touch, pressure, kinesthetic sense, temperature, and pain
What is dysstereognosis?
Inability to identify objects or characteristics by touch alone
What is unilateral spatial neglect?
Neglect of internal and external stimuli (typically on left side)
What usually causes unilateral spatial neglect?
Right parietal lobe legions
What is ideomotor apraxia?
Inability to copy movement or make purposeful gestures
What usually causes ideomotor apraxia?
Left posterior parietal legions
What are the boundaries of the parietal lobes?
Central sulcus, Sylvian fissure, and parieto-occipital sulcus
What is the main role of the anterior parietal lobe?
Involved mostly in somesthetic sensation
What is constructional apraxia?
Inability/difficulty in building, assembling, or drawing objects
What is finger agnosia?
Inability to distinguish, name, or recognize fingers; difficulty selectively moving fingers
