Chapter 06: Brain Imaging Flashcards
What is done in a pneumoencephalography?
Some CSF is removed and air is injected into the ventricles; the head is then x-rayed
Who developed the cerebral arteriography/angiography?
Égas Moniz
What is done in cerebral arteriography/angiogram?
Contrast material is inject into a major artery, then threaded through the carotid artery into the brain; x-ray is done to get results
What is done in computers tomography?
A 3D image is generated by taking x-rays rotated around a single axis
What is done in magnetic resonance imaging (MRI)?
Magnetic fields and radio waves are produced to affect proton and nuclear spin; these patterns are read to measure volume of different brain structures
What is done in diffusion tensor imaging (DTI)?
Magnetism and radio waves are used to interact with water molecules; the water diffusion patterns that result can reveal tissue architecture state
What are the images that DTI produces called?
Tractography images
What is DTI used for?
Examine the integrity of white matter tracts in the brain
What is done in SPECT and PET scans?
IV injection of radioactive tracers allow to track increases in metabolic activity
Which has better resolution, SPECT or PET?
PET scan
What do near-infrared spectroscopy (NIS) and functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) measure?
Hemodynamic response; the change in blood flow in response to stimulation, cognition, or metabolic activity
