Q

What are the major functional subdivisions of the parietal cortex?

A

Primary somatosensory Cortex - Responsible feel.
Intraparietal sulcus and superior parietal lobule - vision for action.
Right Inferior parietal lobule - detect salient events in the environment (shift attention).
Left anterior parietal lobule - use objects in appropriate way.#
Left posterior inferior parietal lobule - Detect salient events in thoughts.

Q

How did Penfield investigate the functions of the somatosensory cortex?

A

Inserted electrodes into the somatosensory cortex of epileptics prior to operating on them.

  • he stimulated different parts of the cortex and recorded the sensations reported by the patients.
  • stimulation to different areas led to different sensation leading to the creation of the somototpic map.

Q

Describe the findings of the grasp calibration and manual estimation task.

A

Patient RV who had optic ataxia after a dorsal stream lesion opened their fingers as wide as they could before closing them on the object on the grasp calibration test however was able to estimate how wide they would need to open their fingers for the manual estimation task.

  • Patient DF suffered from visual agnosia after a ventral stream lesion was unable to estimate how wide to open their finger to grasp an object ew
