A
- administration of nutrients directly into the bloodstream

when does parenteral nutrition need to be used?
A
- used when GI tract cannot be used for the ingestion, digestion, and absorption of essential nutrients

common indications for parental nutrition:
A
- Chronic, severe diarrhea/Vomiting
- Complicated surgery/trauma /GI obstruction
- GI tract anomalies and Fistula
- Severe anorexia nervosa
- Severe malabsorption
- Short bowel syndrome

PN preparation and safety
A
- PN solutions should always be prepared by the pharmacy
- never add anything to PN solutions after they are prepared
- always ensure parenteral nutrition is on an infusion pump
- use filters and a dedicated line for PPN when multilumen line is in use (triple or quadrable lumen central line)
