ParasympathoLYTICS Flashcards
1
Q
What do parasympatholytics do?
A
act as muscarinic antagonists, preventing the actions of acetylcholine at PSNS target tissues
2
Q
Atropine
A
It’s major actions are antimuscarinic:
- Dry secretions (including salivation)
- Slow the GI tract
- Increase heart rate
- Dilate the airways
- Dilate the pupils
3
Q
Atropine should not be used in….
A
Glaucoma or pre-existing tachycardia
4
Q
Caution using atropine in….
A
HORSES
5
Q
Glycopyrrolate
A
- slower onset and longer duration of action than atropine
- gradual effect, not like dramatic effect w/ atropine
- Used on p under for SX
- Preferred over atropine for rabbits
- Can be used for excessive drooling (not common)
6
Q
Oxybutynin AND Propantheline
A
- Urinary ‘antispasmodic’
- Direct antimuscarinic and spasmolytic effects on smooth muscle, particularly bladder and large intestine
- TX for overactive bladder
